Freinetschool De kRing
GO! | Berchem
Amid the infrastructural scale of Antwerp’s Ring and Singelweg, the new Freinet school seeks identity through vertical layering. On a compact plot wrapped around an existing sports hall, a ground-floor kindergarten is combined with three levels of primary education. The design compacts where necessary and unfolds where desirable, with the multipurpose hall as the central heart. The kindergarten nestles in a green setting; playgrounds are sheltered, and a canopy embraces the sports hall, creating a covered outdoor space and connection. Classrooms are positioned between generous interior zones and green outdoor spaces, forming a rich learning landscape that spatially reinforces the Freinet pedagogy. A rational grid with widened corridors and a green platform above the ground floor encourages flexible use and integration with the surroundings. The broken façade rhythm gives the building identity and varied perspectives, while materiality and greenery anchor it within the Groene Singel context. The result is a timeless urban landmark uniting learning and landscape.
