Schoolextension BS GOShil

In the heart of Mechelen, the extension of GO Shil! Primary School transforms a compact urban site into an open and layered learning environment. Within strict site boundaries, capacity, safety, and accessibility are redefined. The project introduces new classrooms, sanitary facilities, and a strategic reorganisation of the playground, gaining an additional 140 m² of play area. A playground on the first floor doubles as a covered outdoor space at ground level, introducing a new vertical dimension to school life. The architecture combines functional clarity with spatial imagination, creating a building that plays with light, layers, and transparency. Constructed under the principle of ‘structure is finish’, the project employs prefabrication and tactile materials such as brick, concrete, and steel. Built within an active school context, the intervention remains precise and light-handed. GO Shil! demonstrates how architecture itself can become part of the learning process in an urban environment.
